Cindy La Ferle's
essay "The Art of Midlife Gardening" was published in the March/April 2010 issue of Victoria magazine, now on newsstands. She blogs weekly at Cindy La Ferle's Home Office: www.laferle.com and writes a weekly "Poems to Inspire" series, showcasing a variety of nationally published poets. 

Robin Gaines
is pleased to announce that
Slice magazine will be publishing one of her short stories in their Fall 2010 issue. In addition, she recently secured agent representation with the Park Literary Group. They plan to actively shop her novel-in-stories, Invincible Summers, to publishers this winter.


Vivian DeGain’s “Better at 50” blog includes Metro Detroit arts and entertainment reviews and sometimes free tickets for the DSO and other theaters at http://viviandegain.wordpress.com. She continues to be the reviewer in Sunday’s Oakland Press.


Writers at Work in 2009

Margo LaGattuta, Michigan poet, essayist and writing teacher, won six prizes in an annual competition run by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. Her first place prize of $1500 in the Founder’s Award was for a poem titled “The Story Melting.” There were 450 entries and the judge was national poet Natasha Sajé. LaGattuta also won a 4th honorable mention in that category for a poem titled “Bird with a Tranquil Look and Its Wings in Flames,” written from a painting by Joan Miró. Her other prizes in this year’s competition were first prize in the Two Ladies from Texas Award for a poem titled “What If”; first prize in the Indiana State Poetry Clubs Award for a poem titled “The House that Swallowed Us”; 6th honorable mention in the Columbine Poets of Colorado Award for “Naked with Trees” and 7th honorable mention in the Louisiana State Poetry Award for “Trying to Write a Poem Again.” Her prizes were awarded at the national convention held in Duluth, Minn. and sponsored by the League of Minnesota Poets. Congratulations Margo!

Cynthia Hampel’s essay won an honorable mention and $200 in Oakland Community College’s 2008-2009 student essay competition. The contest theme focused on relationships between people of divergent cultures, especially between The United States and developing nations. First, second, third places and five honorable mentions were awarded out of 104 entries. Congratulations Cynthia!

Pearl Ahnen
’s one-act play, "For Better or for Worse," about a bride, was staged at the Paw Paw Village Players One-Act Play Festival on  Feb. 13, 14, 20 and 21. Another one-act play, "Dated Material" (about an elderly lady who loves to go to the senior center lunches and meets her true love),  was been selected for the Community Theatre Association of Michigan play festival in Monroe, Mich. on Feb. 27, 28 and Mar. 1. Only 10 plays are selected from throughout the state.

Thirsty Planet
